Digital SAT Math Prep Online with a Bilingual SAT Math Tutor
Digital SAT math prep online works best when it targets both the math and the English it is written in. Here is how the SAT Math section works, why bilingual students lose points on word problems, and how to improve SAT math score with a clear plan and the help of a Russian speaking SAT math tutor.
Digital SAT math: how the section works
The SAT is now taken in College Board's Bluebook app on a laptop or tablet. It has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, with a 10-minute break in between, and the whole test lasts 2 hours 14 minutes. The Math section is split into two equal-length modules:
| Feature | SAT Math |
|---|---|
| Modules | 2, equal length |
| Time | 35 minutes per module, 70 minutes total |
| Questions | 44 |
| Question types | multiple choice and student-produced response (you type the answer) |
| Calculator | allowed throughout Math: built-in Desmos (graphing or scientific) or your own approved non-CAS calculator |
| Score | 200-800 for Math; total SAT score 400-1600 |
The embedded Desmos calculator is a real advantage for students who know how to use it. Systems of equations, quadratics and inequalities can often be checked graphically in seconds, but only if that skill has been practiced well before test day.
What SAT Math tests: the four content domains
| Domain | Questions | Typical topics |
|---|---|---|
| Algebra | 13-15 | linear equations, inequalities, systems, linear functions |
| Advanced Math | 13-15 | nonlinear functions, quadratic and exponential expressions, equivalent forms |
| Problem-Solving and Data Analysis | 5-7 | percentages, ratios, units, statistics, probability |
| Geometry and Trigonometry | 5-7 | area and volume, angles, triangles, circles, right-triangle trigonometry |
According to College Board, roughly 30% of Math questions are set in context: word problems built around science, social studies or real-world scenarios. For bilingual students, this is where most avoidable points disappear.
Adaptive modules and the 200-800 scale
The digital SAT uses multistage adaptive testing. Both modules have the same number of questions, but the second module is either somewhat harder or somewhat easier depending on how the student did on the first. In practice this means:
- careless mistakes in Module 1 cost more than they seem, because they can limit access to the harder second module;
- accuracy matters as much as speed;
- the Math score (200-800) is added to the Reading and Writing score for the total.
Some colleges superscore, combining a student's best Math and best Reading and Writing scores across test dates. Always check each university's own policy.
SAT test dates for international students
Students outside the US can test at international test centers, and College Board states that SAT Weekend dates apply to both US and international test takers. The remaining 2026-2027 dates are November 7 and December 5, 2026, and March 6, May 1 and June 5, 2027. International registration has its own policies and fees, and seats fill up, so register early. We usually recommend planning for two attempts.
Why bilingual students lose points on SAT word problems
A student can be strong at algebra and still score below their ability. Usually the reason is language, not math:
- Unfamiliar terms. They know the concept from lessons in Russian but do not recognize it in phrases like "percent decrease from the original value".
- Long contexts. Time goes into mentally translating a paragraph instead of solving it.
- Small logic words. "At most", "no more than", "respectively", "in terms of" change the meaning, so correct arithmetic produces a wrong answer.
- Trap answers. Intermediate results often appear among the options; misread what is being asked and you pick one of them.
- Curriculum gaps. Families who have moved countries often find that topics like statistics or trigonometry were simply skipped.
All of this shows up quickly in a free diagnostic session: in 30 minutes our teacher checks both the math and how your child reads problems in English, and shows exactly where points are being lost.
How to improve SAT math score: a preparation plan
- Diagnose. Map gaps across the four domains and check mathematical English.
- Fix the core. Algebra and Advanced Math make up most of the test, so start there and build a personal glossary of terms.
- Train word problems. Practice turning a context into an equation: what is given, in which units, what is asked.
- Learn Desmos and pacing. Know when to solve by hand and when to graph.
- Take full practice tests. Simulate test conditions in Bluebook and review every mistake.
- Taper. Light review in the final week, plus a device and app check.
Not sure how long your child needs or where to begin? A free diagnostic session identifies their Bridge stage and turns this outline into a concrete, personal plan.
Students taking calculus can combine SAT prep with AP Calculus, and IB students will find a lot of overlap with IB Math.
Using Bluebook practice tests the right way
Bluebook offers official full-length practice tests that are adaptive and use the same tools as the real exam. Results appear in My Practice, where students can review every question, their answer, the correct answer and an explanation. To get the most out of them:
- take each test in one sitting, timed, in a quiet room;
- review lucky guesses as well as wrong answers;
- label each error as a math issue or a language issue;
- save a few official tests for the final weeks.
A bilingual SAT math tutor: the Bridge method
Genius Math is an online school for Russian-speaking families whose children study in English. As a Russian speaking SAT math tutor team, we use our own Bridge method in four stages: the topic is explained in Russian, English terminology is introduced step by step, the student solves problems in English (including SAT-style questions), and then lessons move fully into English.
Every lesson is one-to-one, online, 60 minutes on an interactive whiteboard, with homework after each session. A curator builds the plan, tracks progress and sends parents a monthly report in Russian. Our teachers are mostly graduates of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics at Saint Petersburg State University, and many live abroad and use English daily. Lessons start from $52 on semester plans. Learn more on our home page.
The best SAT math prep starts with knowing exactly where your child stands. Book a free 30-minute diagnostic session and we will show you a clear, realistic plan.
Free 30-minute diagnostic session
A teacher checks your child's math level and how well they understand problems in the school language, finds their Bridge stage and shows a concrete study plan. It is free, with no obligation.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the digital SAT Math section?
The Math section has 44 questions in two modules of 35 minutes each, 70 minutes in total. Most questions are multiple choice, and some require typing in your own answer.
Can you use a calculator on the digital SAT Math?
Yes, a calculator is allowed on the entire Math section. Bluebook includes an embedded Desmos calculator with graphing and scientific modes, and students may also bring their own approved non-CAS calculator.
How can I improve my SAT math score quickly?
Focus on Algebra and Advanced Math first, since they make up most of the test, and review every mistake from full Bluebook practice tests. For bilingual students, working on math vocabulary and word problems often brings the fastest gains.
Is a Russian speaking SAT math tutor useful if my child studies in English?
It can be, especially when a child understands concepts better in Russian but loses points on English wording. Our Bridge method starts in Russian and moves step by step to solving everything in English, which is how the exam is taken.
